Why You Should Earn Your MFA in Creative Writing with NEC

Explore the history and cultural influence of creative writing through progressive academic study and relate your work to that history.

NEC’s MFA program faculty are best-selling and award-winning professionals who understand the craft of writing and the literary industry. Each student works closely with a mentor who focuses fully on their writing in a one-on-one structure.

Low-Residency Format:

The program includes two residencies per year on New England College’s stunning 220-acre New Hampshire campus. The remainder of the semester is held online. Your degree culminates in a book-length thesis project.

Single- or Dual-Genre Tracks:

Focus your study on a genre that interests you: Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, and Writing for Stage and Screen. You can also choose to pursue a dual-genre degree.

Meaningful Relationships:

Develop lifelong relationships with the entire MFA writing community through the process of giving and receiving feedback in workshops. During residencies, you’ll also spend time together during lectures, evening readings, and meals.

To graduate, you will complete 64 total credits if you are pursuing a single-genre degree or 80 credits for a dual-genre degree.
Core MFA in Creative Writing Courses:
EN 5311 - Mentorship Study: Creative Writing*
EN 6411 - Residency Study: Creative Writing
EN 7051 - Mentorship Study: Thesis Development
EN 7130 - Final Residency: Lecture, Public Reading, and Thesis Defense

*Coursework in Mentorship Study must be completed in both primary and secondary genres.
