Why You Should Earn Your MFA in
Creative Writing with NEC

Academic Depth and Creative Freedom:

Explore the history and cultural influence of creative writing through progressive academic study and relate your work to that history.

Work with Experienced Authors:

Our M.F.A. program faculty are best-selling and award-winning professional writers who understand the craft and business of literature. You’ll work closely with a mentor who understands the genre you work in.

Low-Residency Format:

The program includes one residency on campus in New Hampshire per term and regular meetings with advisors. You’ll study online the rest of the time. The program culminates in a public reading.

Single- or Dual-Genre Tracks:

Focus your study on a genre that interests you: Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, Writing for Stage and Screen, or Interdisciplinary Literary Arts. You can also choose to pursue a dual-genre focus.

Meaningful Relationships:

Develop working relationships with classmates as well as with your mentor through the process of giving and receiving feedback on work.

Our M.F.A. in Creative Writing aims to produce graduates who are active professionals in writing across a variety of genres.

What You Will Learn

Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing

Graduates of this program will:

  • Understand the history, theories, and movements that have shaped and continue to influence the writing, reading, and critical reception of literary works.
  • Be able to locate their own writing in historical, theoretical, and cultural contexts.
  • Be able to engage in rigorous critical discourse on their own writing and the work of others.
  • Demonstrate a keen awareness of the writer’s craft and effective use of craft in their own writing.
  • Effectively employ skills and methods of revision in their writing process.
  • Apply what they have learned and practiced to the production of a substantial body of high‐quality literary work.
  • Demonstrate the skills, knowledge, and discipline necessary for successful post-graduate professional life in creative writing.
  • Actively and ethically engage in their academic, literary, geographic, and cultural communities.
  • Meaningfully contribute to literary/artistic culture and the advancement of the literary arts.

Courses and Curriculum

To graduate, you will complete 64 total credits if you are pursuing a single-genre degree or 80 credits for a dual-genre degree.

EN 5311 - Mentorship Study: Creative Writing*
EN 6411 - Residency Study: Creative Writing
EN 7051 - Mentorship Study: Thesis Development
EN 7130 - Final Residency: Lecture, Public Reading, and Thesis Defense

*Coursework in Mentorship Study must be completed in both primary and secondary genres.
